Description... Acolytes serve at Sunday services and at other special services during the year. They assist by lighting the candles; carrying the crosses and banners, and for special occasions, the tapers; helping to prepare for communion, and in presenting the offering.
Are Additional Volunteers Needed / Wanted?... Always: youngsters age 10 and up with a desire to serve and to know more about the service; adults also welcome to help with instruction
Time and Talent Commitment... An acolyte should be prepared to serve at 8 am occasionally and once at the 10:30 am service every four weeks or so. Once scheduled, it is the acolyte's responsibility to find a substitute if he or she is unavailable for an assigned service. Acolytes must attend occasional training sessions to familiarize themselves with their own responsibilities and to help teach new acolytes. For the adults involved, this is a wonderful opportunity to work with, and positively influence, young people growing up in the Episcopal Church; the time required for adults would include the occasional training sessions as well as helping the acolytes know their specific duties on special Sundays when tapers, extra banners, a baptism and/or a Gospel procession are incorporated into the service.
