The Youngstown Initiative

The Youngstown Initiative is ultimately interested in supporting the revitalization of the city of Youngstown — a city that has in many ways been left behind. We believe that people of Faith have an amazing opportunity to assist in God’s work of resurrection in the city; we can be true agents of hope in the midst of too much hopelessness.

There are many great organizations currently serving the Youngstown area. But where there are many needs, there are seldom enough hands or feet or bodies to carry out the dreams. One of our purposes is to build bridges between those who desire to serve and those who are looking for the willing and able.

Because we have relationships with many great service agencies, we are able to custom-build urban mission projects for you and your group. We want to create partnerships between existing programs and services in the Youngstown area and communities with a calling to urban missions. Past groups have worked with Habitat for Humanity, Easter Seals and the Red Door Café.

We also want to encourage partnerships between churches from across the state of Ohio. Partnering Episcopal churches who choose to participate in The Youngstown Initiative might be eligible for Diocesan funding.

As you have probably experienced, mission work is a great way to build relationships. Besides the relationships formed with those whom we serve and those with whom we serve, working together with other Christians in service to the world can strengthen the bonds of unity. We encourage groups from your church to come to Youngstown; you will be blessed as you bless others.

All groups are welcome. Perhaps you have a youth group interested in working with children; maybe your vestry is interested in working on a building project during their next retreat; maybe a few church friends desire to work together to feed the hungry over a weekend. Whatever your group or interest, we are prepared to meet your service needs.

Serving the Spirit
These urban mission projects are more than just body work, they are spiritual experiences. Each work project — no matter the length — will include a time of spiritual reflection. Pondering your service to others will lead you to discover big or small ways in which the Spirit of Christ changed your heart and mind. As you are God’s Incarnation bringing conversion to the city of Youngstown so is God bringing conversion to your entire person.
