In summer of 2001, Reverend John Horner of St. John's Episcopal Church met with YSU president Dr. David Sweet and determined that revival of the Smoky Hollow neighborhood (just down the hill from the church and the university) would draw more residents downtown.

To date, with more than five dozen community leaders actively involved, much progress has been made. City Architecture of Cleveland has designed a redevelopment plan that includes new parks, walkways, and roads, along with new homes and apartments. Wick Neighbors also continues to include current neighborhood residents in the planning process so that renovation of existing homes — as well as accomodations for a grocery store, gas station, and farmer's market — will not be overlooked.
