Volunteers work with the Mahoning County chapter of Habitat for Humanity to build simple decent homes for low-income families who are willing to contribute "sweat equity" and are able to make low no-interest mortgage payments. The local affiliate of Habitat was founded in 1989; currently more than nineteen new homes and several re-habbed homes are occupied by partner/owners.
St. John's has sponsored and/or co-sponsored a number of houses in Youngstown and the greater Youngstown area since 1998. Many St. John's parishioners have served Habitat as board and committee members, elected officers, and volunteers at home building sites. Workers of varying skill levels from novice to professional are needed to assist with all elements of construction from preparation through completion: everything from wielding a hammer to coordinating volunteers and providing food for the building crew on work days.
Volunteers are also welcome to serve on committees such as Site Selection, Family Selection, Family Support, Public Relations, Fund-Raising, and Church Relations.
