Psalms 95, 32, 143, 102, 130 | Amos 5:6-15 | Hebrews 12:1-14 | Luke 18:9-14.

Lord Jesus Christ, who hast created me, redeemed me, and brought me hither to that which I am, thou knowest what thou wouldst do with me; do with me according to thy will, with mercy.

This prayer was written by Henry VI, one of England's less successful kings. He was born in 1421, became king at the age of nine months, and reigned until 1461, when he was deposed during the Wars of the Roses. Restored briefly from 1470-71, he died (perhaps murdered) in the Tower of London. This prayer was written by Henry VI, one of England's less successful kings. It's likely that Henry would not have chosen to be king. Perhaps he would have preferred to be a monk or a scholar (his greatest achievements were the founding of Kings College, Cambridge and Eton College). His story is one of power struggles, regents and bouts of insanity. But like the man in Jesus' parable he knew, in the tumult of war and adversity, where our hope lies.
